Apple Launches New Proton-like Tool To Run Windows Games on Mac
Apple unveils Game Porting Toolkit at WWDC, which ports Windows games to macOS. Performance concerns persist, but progress is promising. Read more to know.
During Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company unveiled exciting news for game developers. They introduced a Game Porting Toolkit that simplifies and speeds up the process of porting Windows games to Mac. Similar to Valve's Proton and the Steam Deck, Apple's toolkit utilizes CrossOver's source code, enabling instant translation of Windows games to run on macOS.
An engineering project manager for GPUs and graphics at Apple, Aiswariya Sreenivassan, explained in a WWDC session earlier this week that-
“The new Game Porting Toolkit provides an emulation environment to run your existing unmodified Windows game and you can use it to quickly understand the graphics feature usage and performance potential of your game when running on a Mac,”

Major Issue with Apple Game Porting Toolkit
However, there is a major concern regarding how games will perform in this environment. Since most games won't be optimized through this tool, there may be performance issues and bugs until developers create their own ports. Despite these challenges, Reddit users have already managed to run games like Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV, and Hogwarts Legacy on M1 and M1 Max MacBook Pro models, showing promising results with some limitations.
If Apple continues refining its translation layer, there is hope that one day users will be able to run Windows games on macOS, similar to the experience on the Steam Deck. Although this dream is still distant, Apple's recent efforts indicate that it could eventually become a reality. What do you think Apple will be able to reach that level?
